Saturday links — Will Winfield struggle to make the team?

We’ll have full coverage of day three of Seahawks training camp a little later, a practice that will again begin at 10 a.m. at the VMAC.

As USA Today notes, Seattle’s roster has a heavy influence of former Minnesota Vikings, including cornerback Antoine Winfield.

The author of that story also Tweeted that he doesn’t think it’s a lock that Winfield makes the team:

He later went on to Tweet that the presence of younger players that the team may want to keep such as Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell might factor in:

Winfield isn’t making all that much — $2 million with $1 million guaranteed.

Also a factor is the return to health of Walter Thurmond, who could play a similar role as Winfield’s this season — the nickel cornerback spot — and is a player the team undoubtedly wants to keep around.

There was little evidence yesterday, though, of Winfield not being heavily in the plans as he worked with the No. 1 nickel defense throughout practice, a day when the the defense generally dominated.

But the Seahawks do appear to have a really deep set of cornerbacks right now. Evidence of that is that they have moved second-year player DeShawn Shead — who was on the active roster for the last four games of the season and the two post-season games without playing — to safety, apparently filling the roster depth hole created when they cut Ray Polk earlier this week. Shead has played both spots with the Seahawks but is listed as a cornerback.

Undoubtedly the Seahawks will have some hard decisions to  make when roster cutdown time comes.
