Report: Winfield to retire

There’s a new twist to the Antoine Winfield situation as Jay Glazer is reporting that he has told the Seahawks he plans to retire.

Here’s Glazer’s Tweet:

Seattle signed the 36-year old in the off-season to replace Marcus Trufant as the team’s nickelback.

But Winfield had some nagging injuries throughout his time with the Seahawks, and missed the last two exhibition games with a knee injury suffered in practice.

His retiremement clears the way for Seattle to keep some of its younger cornerbacks such as Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane.

Seattle’s official lists of its moves should come sometime after 3 p.m.

UPDATE: Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed Winfield’s retirement in this Tweet:
