What they said: Pete Carroll

Here’s what Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll had to say after today’s 41-20 win over the Vikings:

(Opening…)  A really nice win today.  This was a good opportunity for us to have a little momentum going into the bye and feel good about it.   We wanted to get this win badly so we could feel comfortable about taking this break.  I don’t think it comes at a great time, because we like to keep playing, to tell you the truth, but we’ll use it and we’ll get some guys rested, we’re in pretty good shape at this point, but it’s still going to help us I would think.  We would like to keep playing.  I thought the defense did a fantastic job against Adrian.  He’s a fantastic football player, he can do it all, and the guys just kept him down all day long.  That’s really what we wanted to do on the defense, I know there are some yards they get in the game, but we handled him well and tackled well and really flew to the football the way we wanted to.  That was a nice part of this day, we thought our biggest challenge was to slow him down.  We handled the kicking game well, too.  We really respected their returners and we kept them in check for the most part.  They had one good return, but all in all we really answered that one, too.  That was another big deal going in.   Anytime we get the ball four times, and [they] turn it over like that we’re going to be really hard to beat, and that was a great day.  As the day went on, the guys got going, they got hungry and the ball kept coming our way.  That’s exactly how we like to play.  It was really fun to see all those guys—Walter gets his touchdown, but probably the pick of the day is Clint McDonald for sure.  So, a lot of things worked out well.  Russell played great today; great numbers and all.  We didn’t have the running game like we would like, but we had plenty of play-action passes and stuff that got us plenty of yards, and the playmaking was good.  Doug had a great catch; a great Two Minute drive for our guys and we love seeing that.  You got to see Percy for the first time, as did I, and I’m really fired up just that he got in the game.  He played a little bit and had an impact and we got him out, and now he’s ready to take two weeks and we’ll get back.  We should be in full flight by the time we return.  The kickoff return was pretty special, and nobody liked it more than Percy.  He wanted to do something, and he did and that was great.  We’re excited about that.  It’s a good end to this first segment of the season and we’re crank it up and go back to Monday night against the Saints.

(On getting a big touchdown just before halftime… )  I think the Two Minute work that we’ve done, we’ve spent an unbelievable amount of time on it, and it’s paid off almost every chance we get.  Russell is just totally in command of it, and the guys came through and we did everything right.  We took all the opportunities, and maximized them with the clock, so it was great stuff.  Love it.

(On whether Harvin got more snaps than expected because of Kearse’s injury…)  No, I think he had 16 snaps, is what we counted.  We were trying to keep it under 20, so we did a great job of that.

(On whether Harvin would have returned kickoffs had Harvin been available…)   We had talked about that at great length, and I was hoping to get him one, somewhere in the game.  Had we not needed it, maybe we wouldn’t do it.  It just worked out, the opportunity was just right, and he took full advantage of it.  You can see why he’s one of the most productive kickoff returners.  All of a sudden, the blocking was perfect.  I don’t know how that happened.  He hit just like he always has, so he’s a great weapon.  I think the respect they showed by kicking the ball and blooping it the next time, is a factor that is a positive for us, too.

(On the pass protection of the O-line… )  I think both the tackles were, let’s call it ‘rusty’.  I don’t think they had their best games.  I think that the speed of the game, they had to catch up with it a little bit,  but it was great that the played a lot, and now they’ll get a break and we’ll come back and try to get them right.  It was a lot to ask of them after being out so long.  I think they’ll play better.  I don’t know about  the pass rush in general, but just to comment about those two guys.

(On whether Wilson is becoming more of a ‘point guard’…)  I think he is right where we want him.  He scrambled at the right times, he ducked out of there when he had to, he made the plays on the scrambles throwing the ball around.  He did everything we want.  That’s our football team.  That’s our factors that make us unique, and we’re going to keep looking for it to come through and the receivers making the good decisions to get open and all that.  That’s us, because he brings that for us.  I think he’s playing great football.  He’s doing everything we want, and gives us hope that we can have a really great finish to the season.

(On whether he watched the end of the 49ers/Saints game….)  You mean where they kicked the field goal to win it right there at the end?  No.  [laughter]  No, we saw it, yeah.  We just saw it in the locker room real quick.  We just caught the end of it.  It’s good.

(On the play of Percy Harvin…)  He looked….There’s another play in the game where we don’t hit him when he goes deep and he runs through the defense and he just looked ridiculously fast.  He ran right up the seam one time.  He’s an extraordinary football player, but he’s a better competitor.  And that’s what we love about him.  Adding that guy’s mentality to this football team, and we’re very fortunate to have him.

(On Baldwin playing on the outside…)   He’s done great.  Look at the win he had on the fade route vs. press; he had a tremendous release to get deep early; the great catch he made at the end of two minutes. He’s doing a beautiful job.  He’s coming through.  He’s taking advantage of the opportunity, which is what we had hoped.  These guys are all going to keep mixing, to get us our yards and our plays and all that.  So, it’s a pretty good situation right now.

(On how excited he is about the offense….)  We’ve sensed that since we saw them all come back on the field, really, this week.  It is exciting for us; we know we can get better.  That’s really what this is about right now, we have to keep getting better.  Our guys know that that’s out there for us.  We have a lot of work to do to finish this thing off right.

(On any injuries…)  Kearse had a concussion.  That’s what we know happened.  Other than that, we came out fine.
