Report: Seahawks have contacted Winfield

A day later, there are more rumors about Seattle possibly having interest in Antoine Winfield to help fill in the cornerback depth with Walter Thurmond suspended for four games and Brandon Browner out for another month or so with a groin injury.

Mike Garafolo of FoxSports.com wrote this morning that Seattle has indeed contacted Winfield.

Here’s what he wrote:

The Seahawks have contacted the three-time Pro Bowl selection, a source told FOX Sports. And while Winfield announced his retirement at the end of training camp with Seattle, it wasn’t truly a retirement. The 36-year-old Winfield has continued to work out and has heard from several teams recently but has turned down all offers. He’s looking for a chance to play in his first Super Bowl and the Seahawks could give him that opportunity.

What will be interesting here is what kind or promise the Seahawks make about keeping Winfield on the active roster through the playoffs.

Seattle has not put Browner on Injured Reserve, hoping he might make it back for the playoffs.

Winfield almost certainly doesn’t want to come back just for four games and then be told to see-you-later.

And remember how important backups Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane are to special teams — especially Lane, one of the best special teamers in the NFL. Point there being that you wouldn’t move either of them off the roster.

For the present it’s not an issue as Seattle could sign Winfield and just put him in the roster spot that will be opened up with Thurmond’s suspension. And maybe they would just decide to do it now and work it out later.

Winfield, who turned 36 in June, is more of a true slot corner than is Maxwell, making him a truer fit as a replacement for Thurmond. And right now, Seattle also has just three healthy cornerbacks on the active roster, so it will have to make a move of some sort this week whether it is signing Winfield or calling up DeShawn Shead from the practice squad or something else.

Seahawk players will return to work today, though the team does not have any media availability until tomorrow.
