First look: New York Giants

eligiants

Here’s our weekly First Look at Seattle’s upcoming opponent:

Game time: 10 a.m. Pacific, MetLife Stadium

TV: FOX

Coach: Tom Coughlin, 156-127 in 18 seasons.

Record: 5-8

Last game: Lost at San Diego 37-14.

The series: The Giants lead the series 9-6 but the Seahawks won the most recent meeting in 2011, 36-25, in New Jersey.

The early line: Seahawks by 7.

Key players: Quarterback Eli Manning (above in an Associated Press photo) is having one of his worst seasons with 20 interceptions — tied with the Jets’ Geno Smith for the most in the NFL this season — throwing two more in Sunday’s disaster at San Diego that ended the Giants’ playoff hopes. WR Victor Cruz remains a one of the top receivers in the game with 71 receptions this season, tied for 13th in the NFL. Safety Antrell Rolle is tied for second in the NFL with five interceptions and end Justin Tuck has 8.5 sacks to rank 18th. Tuck has six sacks in the last two games.

New York’s keys to success: One number best illustrates New York’s struggles this season — a minus-13 turnover differential that is the third-worst in the NFL (Jets are minus-18 and Houston minus-14). The Giants had three turnovers Sunday and the Chargers scored touchdowns after the first two in taking a 24-0 lead. The turnovers helped lead to the Giants beginning the season 0-6. They then won five of six as the defense allowed just 14 points per game. But they have now lost two of three to fall out of the playoffs. The Giants, long known for their powerful running attack, are now one of the worst running teams in the NFL, ranking 26th this week at 88 yards per game.  That has put additional pressure on Manning, whose current passer rating of 74.2 would be his worst for a season since 2007. New York’s struggles have led to speculation about the future of 67-year-old coach Tom Coughlin, who is 88-67 in 10 seasons with the Giants.

BY THE NUMBERS

2004 — That’s the last time the Giants had a losing record in what was Tom Coughlin’s first year as coach. They will need to win their last three games to avoid that fate this season.

116 — Number of points opponents have scored this year off of the Giants’ 34 turnovers (by contrast, Seattle’s foes have scored just 34 points off turnovers this season).

32 — Number of times Manning has been sacked this season, a career-high.
