Seattle’s list of inactives for Sunday’s NFC Championship game again contained an offensive line surprise — rookie Michael Bowie.
Bowie started at left guard against the Saints and went the entire way.
But Seattle is not afraid to mix it up on the line and this indicates that James Carpenter will return to the starting lineup — and possibly that Paul McQuistan, who also did not play last week, will again factor in. Seattle also is again keeping rookie Alvin Bailey as an active backup, which was its usual custom down the stretch of the season as they feel he has the better versatility — Seattle going with just eight active OLs, with Lemuel JeanPierre the other.
Seattle coaches did not reveal this during the week so we are unclear on the reasoning, but likely it has to do with the matchup against the 49ers, who play more of a 3-4, and also that Carpenter is regarded as a better run blocker.
Coach Pete Carroll hinted a little at this during the week when he gave a vague answer to the question of whether Bowie would again start.
The other Seattle inactives featured no surprises. They are: Percy Harvin, Christine Michael, Michael Bowie, Caylin Hauptmann, O’Brien Schofield, Benson Mayowa and Jordan Hill.
Harvin and Hill are injured, and the rest are simply healthy inactives as the team pares the 53-man roster to the gameday 46.
