Saturday night musings: Bryant reaction, and more

A few Saturday night free agent links and notes to pass along. …

— Here’s some good detail on the signing of Red Bryant by Jacksonville today, including the note that former Seahawks DL coach Todd Wash is also with Jacksonville. NFL.com among those to report the deal is four years for $17 million;

Bruce Irvin among those to wish Bryant well in his new home:

— In case you were wondering, Jacksonville is not on the schedule again until 2017, when the Seahawks would to go there;

— Zero surprise to read reports in Chicago papers that the Bears are preparing to make a major play for Michael Bennett. Bennett’s brother, Martellus, plays for the Bears and has been open about saying he wants his brother to join him. Michael Bennett has been asked about that numerous times and has said that it’d be enticing, but wouldn’t be the sole factor;

— Green Bay signed cornerback Sam Shields Saturday to a four-year deal worth as much as $39 million. And no sooner had that news begun to register and people began writing about how that may only make the market for cornerbacks that much hotter in the next few years,with Richard Sherman among those who could benefit. Seattle could extend Sherman now, but will have to before the 2015 season, and the Seahawks will have to make moves now keeping in mind that they will need to bank some money to take care of Sherman, Earl Thomas and Russell Wilson over the next year. And in case you wondered if Sherman noticed. …

— This is the time of year when things can get a little silly. An ESPN reporter merely threw out the idea that maybe Mark Sanchez could end up as a Seahawk due to his connection with Pete Carroll, and I then saw Tweets calling this a rumor of the Seahawks maybe being interested in bringing Sanchez to Seattle. Not sure I’d spend much time worrying about this one as I’d fully expect Tarvaris Jackson back in 2014;

— More New York speculation that the Jets might be the team to beat for Golden Tate;

— LA Times with a good overview of the top 20 free agents available;

— Finally, Yahoo.com with a good roundup of some of the rumors out there on the first day teams could officially talk to pending free agents.
