Report: Bears expect to sign Bennett

It’s been long speculated that the Chicago Bears would be one of the most serious suitors for Michael Bennett.

And according to the Chicago Tribune, as relayed by Pro Football Talk, the Bears plan to make such a concerted effort to get Bennett that they are expecting to sign him once the free agent signing period begins Tuesday at 1 p.m. Seattle time.

The Bears have been thought to be serious players because his brother, Martellus, plays there and has been public on Twitter and elsewhere about wanting his brother to join him; and because they have a big need for defensive linemen.

Seattle appeared to be making salary cap room for Bennett with the releases last week of Sidney Rice and Red Bryant. But intriguingly, they also have done nothing with Chris Clemons, who many assumed would be cut by now since he is scheduled for a $9.6 million cap hit in 2014. But if the Seahawks lose Bennett, they then might want to keep Clemons around.

So maybe the fact that nothing has been done with Clemons signals Seattle knowing that Bennett may be on the way out.

We’ll find out soon.
