Golden Tate signs with Detroit

The Detroit Lions have signed receiver Golden Tate to a five-year deal, bringing to a close the Seahawks career of the man who was their leading receiver during their 2013 Super Bowl season.

Here is the story.

And here are the contract details:

Tate led the Seahawks with 64 receptions for 898 yards last season and was also the team’s leading punt returner.

Word had been that Seattle wanted to re-sign Tate for something in the $4.5-5 million a year range.

The Lions deal averages out to more than $6 million a season.

He becomes the fourth of Seattle’s 15 players who had the chance to become unrestricted free agents to sign with new teams so far.

The others are S Chris Maragos (Eagles), DT Clinton McDonald (Tampa Bay) and LB O’Brien Schofield (Giants), though as noted earlier, Schofield’s deal has since apparently fallen through.

Seattle will now undoubtedly look to either free agency or the draft to find replace Tate (and also don’t completely rule out that the Seahawks could bring back Sidney Rice, who remains a free agent after being released by Seattle two weeks ago).

Meanwhile, here’s Tate’s goodbye to Seattle via Twitter
