Another fairly quiet day for the Seahawks in free agency —- as far as we know, anyway. And it appears with each passing day that the Seahawks are content to stay out of bidding wars and wait for later bargains while also keeping enough cash in hand for the soon-to-be-needed extensions for the likes of Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson.
That may frustrate some fans who wish the team would get involved — maybe just wanting to be part of the conversation, if nothing else. But Seattle’s relative lack of activity is what many expected, given the team’s long-term goals. And as noted, I’d expect Seattle to try to snap up a few bargains as the free agency period continues.
Also recall that Seattle will likely get pretty well compensated with picks in the 2015 draft for the free agents it has lost (though not for cut players such as Red Bryant and Chris Clemons). What Seattle would get can’t be calculated until the free agency period is over. But as of now, Seattle would have a net loss of free agents and sure to get a few extra mid-to-late-round picks (I’ll try to break this down in detail at a later date).
As for news today, it was confirmed to the Times that DT Henry Melton visited. We’ll see where that leads. Melton is also expected to visit the Cowboys, who are in desperate need of some defensive linemen and might be more aggressive about getting him.
Walter Thurmond was reported to have visited the 49ers, who signed another cornerback in Chris Cook but also lost one in Tarell Brown. It’s known that the Seahawks have not closed the door on re-signing Thurmond.
Sources also reiterated to the Times that the Seahawks remain interested in re-signing WR Sidney Rice. But it also doesn’t sound like there’s anything imminent there.
Same holds true with PK Steven Hauschka, wh0 the team remains interested in signing (obviously, the Seahawks hope to have a kicker next season). As of yet, nothing reported linking Hauschka to any other team.
There also continue to indications that the Seahawks are considering signing Jermichael Finley, who visited earlier this week. But nothing new on that as of this writing.
Also, there were reports earlier today that DT Vance Walker was due to make a visit to Seattle. But he then signed a contract with the Chiefs for three years and $13.75 million.
Finally, WR Steve Smith said in a conference call after signing with the Ravens that he had interest from the Seahawks. How much is hard to gauge since Smith signed so quickly.
Here’s the tracker, and you’ll notice we have added all known contract details, as well as Seattle’s available cap space:
