More potential trouble for the 49ers as Aldon Smith is detained at LAX UPDATED

There could be more trouble brewing for a star player from the San Francisco 49ers as there are multiple reports this afternoon that standout linebacker Aldon Smith was detained at Los Angeles International Airport after allegedly yelling the word “bomb” in the terminal.

This comes three days after reports surfaced that San Francisco QB Colin Kaepernick was among three players named in a report of a “suspicious incident” the previous week in a Miami hotel room that belonged to Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette.

There’s no official word yet on the Smith incident. And as the linked story notes, Miami police said last week only that they are investigating the “suspicious incident” and there have been no specific allegations or charges as of Sunday afternoon.

Smith and Kaepernick are two of the young leaders of a 49ers team that has been to three straight NFC title games and would likely be tabbed as Seattle’s top threat to get to the Super Bowl again in 2015. That means that even if there are as yet no charges, it’s a somewhat troubling sign for the 49ers — Tim Kawakami does a good job of putting that into perspective here.

UPDATE — Here’s an updated story 0n the Smith situation reporting that he was arrested. And here’s another reporting he is free on $20,000 bail.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Mercury News has a good overview of Smith’s recent issues and what this could mean for the 49ers.
