Buried at the bottom of this story is Jayson Jenks’ mock draft.
As you can read, Jenks has gone a little bit off the beaten path for his Seattle pick, predicting they will take Ohio State outside linebacker Ryan Shazier.
One of the biggest questions about that is whether Shazier will still be there then — lots of buzz that he’s moving up into the middle part of the first round.
But if he is there, he would certainly fit the “best player available” mode and would add depth at the LB spot and also some insurance if the Seahawks lose some of their LBs in free agency over the next year or two (all of the starters will have contracts up by the end of 2015).
I’ve gone on a record a few times slotting UCLA OL Xavier Su’a-Filo here, and no real reason not to stick with it now.
Su’a-Filo appears best suited for guard, a spot where the Seahawks could use depth, competition and insurance if they lose and/or decide not to keep James Carpenter after the 2014 season.
At 23, Su’a-Filo might also be readier to play than a lot of other guys who could be picked here.
But as Jenks notes, and as I also wrote today, the best bet might be that the Seahawks trade out of the first round and get more picks for later rounds, meaning they don’t add anybody tonight.
We’ll find out soon.
