OTA personnel updates: LB Bruce Irvin has hip surgery

The Seahawks’ second OTA open to the media has concluded, and the biggest news is that linebacker Bruce Irvin has had hip surgery and is out indefinitely.

The team said only that the surgery was today and that there is no prognosis — coach Pete Carroll did not talk to the media today. So as to the question of when he’ll be back, we don’t really know.

But Irvin himself just Tweeted that he will be back by training camp:

He also followed up with this response to teammate Bobby Wagner:

Irvin practiced last week during the OTA that was open to the media, and it is unclear if he suffered a new injury or this is to clean up something that has lingered for a while or what.

LB O’Brien Schofield was also out today and Malcolm Smith remains out after having had ankle surgery (though he was out of a boot today), so the linebacker spot was a little thin today.

In terms of a few other quick personnel notes:

— DT Tony McDaniel was absent today for personal reasons which is worth a reminder that OTAs are voluntary and players often miss a day or two of the 10 workouts.

— RB Marshawn Lynch was also not present, as his is norm for these workouts. CB Phillip Adams was also not present, for what were also termed personal reasons.

— Rookie DLs Andru Pulu and Cassius Marsh also remain absent due to the rule preventing them from participating because they attended schools on the quarter system that are still in session.

— LT Russell Okung and S Kam Chancellor will sit out all of OTAs and mini-camp after earlier surgeries, but were present today. Same with WR Sidney Rice.

— Among others sitting out today with what the team said were varying bumps and bruises that are not considered major were RB Spencer Ware, LB Heath Farwell and TE RaShaun Allen. OT Michael Bowie also sat out much of the end of practice but participated early.

UPDATE — And to head off some questions, if I didn’t mention them above then they were present and taking part in practice. Maybe most notable of that group would be Jesse Williams, who was out last week for the open OTA but participated today. WR Chris Matthews, also out last week for the practice we saw, has been back and was out today. All of the QBs were also there today and taking part, though in the team sessions, Keith Price and B.J. Daniels did not get snaps with those going instead to what are the top three QBs — Russell Wilson, Tarvaris Jackson and Terrelle Pryor.

And I should have noted earlier that Cliff Avril was back today after being absent last Tuesday.
