Avril, Mebane discuss Red Bryant and busy offseason

We had the chance to catch up with defensive end Cliff Avril and defensive tackle Brandon Mebane before Wednesday’s Mariners game. Avril threw out the first pitch — he made it to home but did so with a soft lob — and Mebane accompanied him.

Here are some of the highlights of the quick chat with the two:

Mebane on the departure of defensive lineman Red Bryant, who signed with the Jaguars after the Seahawks released him: “Red is my best friend. The good thing about all of this is Red is able to perform with another team. The thing is, he’s not out of football. He didn’t have to retire due to a tragedy. The good thing is he’s still playing and he’s still around. We’ll always been friends. I’m going to miss playing with Red, but I’m happy for him and his family. They get to be in a new place and see new things. And they’re close to Disney World too. That’s good for him.”

Mebane on what the phone call was like with Bryant after he was released: “We were just kind of a stalemate on the phone, like, ‘Man, is that for real?’ We know how the business is. We just took it and moved on. Like I said, we’re always going to be friends.”

Mebane on understanding the realities of the business of pro football: “I wasn’t really close with anybody like Red like that. I’m close with a lot of guys on the team, but me and Red was like brothers. But like I said, it’s all good. We’re always going to be friends, and he’s got a big enough house that I can take my daughter and take my wife to Disney World.”

Mebane on if Bryant finally got his clothes out of Mebane’s house (Bryant had left some their when he was a rookie in 2008): “That’s my daughter’s room. I had to kick him out man, like you’ve got to go. She showed up April 24th.”

Mebane on Michael Bennett buying replica Lombardi trophies for some of his teammates: “It’s at the house. Mike Bennett got us one and when I got it was like a little kid on Christmas. I was like, Ah, man, come on, you can’t give me nothing like this. Mike Bennett, he gets us some nice gifts. He got us a nice gift during Christmas. He got us all mini iPads. It was off the chains, man.”

Avril on why he didn’t attend the White House to celebrate Seattle’s Super Bowl win: “I was overseas on my honeymoon. I think that was a good excuse. We already had it planned, so it was a good excuse. Hopefully we can get another opportunity to go back.”

Avril on getting the band back together along the defensive line, including re-signing Michael Bennett: “The whole band isn’t back. We’re missing a couple guys, but I’m happy that Mike B. is back for sure. Me and him work great together. I’m definitely happy that I get to lineup next to him.”

Avril on if he knows what his role might be next year: “I’m pretty sure, just off our roster and everything, I’m pretty sure my role will increase a little bit. I’m embracing it, and it will give me more chances to get after the quarterback.”

Avril on his contract situation (He is in the final year of his deal): “I’d definitely like to finish this thing out, going into my seventh season, with the Seahawks. But I understand the business side of things. They just signed two of the best DBs out there to some big deals. We’ll figure it out. Hopefully we can make something happen, but I’m just ready for this season to start.”
