Seahawks waive WR Phil Bates

The Seahawks today have waived wide receiver Phil Bates, which opens a spot on the team’s 53-man active roster.

No corresponding move has yet been announced, but the Seahawks are in obvious need of a cornerback. So it would be no surprise if the team signs a cornerback before the weekend is through.

Bates, a third-year player from Ohio, was part of the initial 53-man roster set a week ago. He then was waived when the team decided to bring back Bryan Walters. Bates was on the 53-man roster for the win over Green Bay but was not active.

Seattle had eight receivers on its roster for the Green Bay game, a number that wasn’t going to last long.

If Bates clears waivers, he would be an obvious candidate to re-sign back to Seattle’s practice squad.
