Steve Mariucci says Seahawks “might be the best defense ever”

The Seahawks may have been off today. But their 36-16 win over the Packers Thursday night was still a big focus of the morning NFL preview shows.

And one comment — from former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci — figures to get particular attention.

Mariucci, an analyst on the NFL Network, said of the Seahawks that: “This might be the best defense ever.”

Offering more plaudits for the Seattle defense was fellow NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner.

“What we’ve learned is that you can’t beat this defense with just a great quarterback,” Warner said. “I think that’s what we’ve seen in these last two games (meaning the Super Bowl and the win over the Packers).

Here are a couple of other quotes from the NFL Network shows, as supplied by the NFL Network:

“What stood out most to me was how physical this team was. We had a motto last year on our offense. It was to play on a level that the opposition wasn’t willing to go, therefore incapable of matching. That’s what I saw Thursday.” – Michael Robinson on the Seattle Seahawks’ 36-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers

“We actually lost the opening game to the Cardinals and on the plane ride back, Russell [Wilson] could hear the players; everybody was saying, ‘We need Matt Flynn in there, we need a more experienced quarterback.’ But he didn’t let it deter him from what he wanted to do. He still wants to be one of the best quarterbacks of all time.” – Michael Robinson on playing with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson when he was a rookie

“The one team that can even challenge the Seahawks is the New England Patriots. That’s because of their defense and their quarterback. Tom Brady, the plays that he makes with receivers – we don’t even know their names half the time – puts him in a category to be able to challenge the Seattle Seahawks.” – Michael Robinson on the Seattle Seahawks’ greatest opponents
