Seahawks place CB Jeremy Lane on Injured Reserve with designation to return

The Seahawks have placed cornerback Jeremy Lane on Injured Reserve with a designation to return. The move was first reported by ESPN and since confirmed.

That means Lane can begin practicing in six weeks and return to the team in eight weeks. Teams can use this designation once a year, and Seattle used it last year on left tackle Russell Okung when he suffered a foot/toe injury in week two and returned later in the season.

Seattle has a bye in week four, so Lane should have to miss only seven games, meaning, from what I can tell, he could return for a game on Nov. 9 against the New York Giants.

Lane re-injured his groin against the Packers on Thursday, after which coach Pete Carroll said he would be “down a while.”

Lane was the team’s starting nickelback and played 32 snaps against Green Bay before being injured. Marcus Burley then stepped in and played 25 more, with the two combining to play 57 of 62 possible snaps.

With Lane on IR, the team will undoubtedly sign another cornerback, with Tharold Simon also out four weeks or so after having knee surgery last week to repair some cartilage damage.

I wrote this a couple of days ago about how the losses of Lane and Simon could impact Seattle the next few weeks as it plays prolific passing offenses in San Diego and Denver.

One player known to be working out for the Seahawks today is free agent Keith Lewis, who was waived by Tampa Bay in the cutdown to 53.

UPDATE — The Seahawks also reportedly have worked out cornerback Mike Harris, recently released by the Jaguars.
