Seahawks sign center Patrick Lewis, waive CB Josh Thomas

The Seahawks have signed center Patrick Lewis to the 53-man roster to add depth with starter Max Unger dealing with a strained foot. Coach Pete Carroll said Unger is day-to-day  but that they wanted to add depth at the spot. Stephen Schilling is the backup and played three snaps against Washington after Unger was hurt. Unger returned to the game and played the final series.

To make room for Lewis, the team waived cornerback Josh Thomas, who had been signed following the first game of the season.

The move ends an uncommon streak of roster stability for Seattle, which hadn’t made a move since Sept. 8.

Lewis was with Seattle briefly in the preseason playing in the exhibition finale against Oakland before being waived. Lewis had been signed to the Seattle roster on Aug. 27., played against the Raiders Aug. 28 and then was waived on Aug. 30.

He had been on Cleveland’s practice squad before signing with Seattle today.

Lewis played at Texas A&M where he was the center when Johnny Manziel won the Heisman.

Carroll said he is confident in Schilling if he has to start this week saying “if he gets a chance to play this week we expect him to play really well.”

Thomas played in three games for Seattle credited with one pass defense. He had been signed to provide depth after Tharold Simon had knee surgery. But Simon is expected back in the next few weeks.
