NFL Network report: Cowboys coaches telling players Richard Sherman is overrated

Well this story could certainly add an interesting subplot to today’s Seattle-Dallas game.

According to this report from the NFL Network, Dallas coaches have been telling their players this week that Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is “overrated” (at least they aren’t calling him me-di-o-cre).

The report comes from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, who said:

“The word from Cowboys coaches to their players: That Richard Sherman is overrated, that the rest of the secondary props him up and makes him play better than he actually is, that Sherman is protected by some of the best safeties in the game — including, of course, Earl Thomas. The Cowboys coaches do think the Seattle defense is the best defense in the NFL. But as far as Sherman, they feel like they can attack.”

As the story notes, Sherman should have some big matchups today with Dallas WR Dez Bryant. The story also wonders if Sherman — who has a well-documented history of feeding off slights of any and all kinds — will hear about this by kickoff. That would seem a given, only adding to the intrigue today.

UPDATE:

Here are a few more quotes from the NFL Network shows today about the Seahawks:

“This defense runs through the defensive line and Bobby Wagner. His ability to diagnose plays one or two steps before other defenders diagnose them, that’s what gives him the upper hand all the time…Bobby Wagner will be a Pro-Bowl player this year. He is the force behind the Seattle defense.” – Michael Robinson on the crucial role linebacker Bobby Wagner plays for the Seattle Seahawks defense

“This is a career-defining win. Not only for the Dallas franchise based on what they’ve done since they went to the Super Bowl last, but for Tony Romo as well.” – Sterling Sharpe on why the Dallas Cowboys need win against the Seattle Seahawks

“Dez Bryant has the edge over Richard Sherman because Dez Bryant’s speed is greater than Richard Sherman’s speed. If he gets him one-on-one, that’s a mismatch in the Cowboys’ favor. DeSean Jackson showed us a little bit of what that speed can do to Richard Sherman last week in the Monday night game.” Shaun O’Hara on the matchup between Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman

Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning

“What the Legion of Boom does is they scare you into thinking that you can’t take shots down the field. They scare you into thinking I can’t move the ball, they’re going to get after me but I think that’s what you have to do. That’s how you have to attack them. You have to take your chances to hold the ball and push the ball down field and get big plays.” – Kurt Warner on facing the Seattle Seahawks defense
