Seahawks middle linebacker Bobby Wagner out for a few weeks, at least; K.J. Wright to take over in the middle

The Seahawks will indeed be without middle linebacker Bobby Wagner for a few weeks with a turf toe suffered in Sunday’s loss to Dallas, with coach Pete Carroll saying today “he’s really sore and looks like it’s going to be a while.”

Carroll later said “probably” when asked if that means Wagner will be out for a few weeks. Seattle already has used its short-term Injured Reserve designation for this season on Jeremy Lane. So the Seahawks will just have to carry Wagner on the roster while he rehabs.

Carroll said Wagner will not need surgery.

With Wagner out, K.J. Wright will get the start at middle linebacker Sunday at St. Louis with Malcolm Smith moving into Wright’s role at weakside linebacker.

That’s the same alignment Seattle used for games last season against Tennessee and at Arizona after Wagner suffered a sprained ankle.

Wright said it’s not much of a switch for him and noted that he went over the defensive game plan on Monday with linebackers coach Ken Norton.

Carroll also said center Max Unger will not be back this week, meaning Steve Schilling will again start at center.

But Carroll said there is a chance that cornerback Byron Maxwell may be able to play this week, saying: “He’s made a big jump and we’ll see. We’re going day to day with him and will see what happens..He’s shocked the guys that he’s back as quick as he is to this point. We don’t know what that means until the weekend.”

Seattle should get a reinforcement at cornerback as Tharold Simon will practice fully today with an eye on being able to play Sunday. Simon spoke to reporters and said he feels he is ready to go. He said he had surgery to repair what was found to be a torn meniscus.

Carroll also said the team could still make a move to add to its cornerback depth if needed.

But he said he is confident in the play of Marcus Burley and said DeShawn Shead can also be used at cornerback, if needed.

Here is some video of Carroll talking today about St. Louis’ offense and Seattle’s third-down issues. I’ll have more later:
