Seahawks morning news and notes: Tom Cable says “we are just a little bit out of whack offensively”

The Seahawks will be back on the practice field at the VMAC later today with the last heavy physical practice of work in preparation for the game Sunday at St. Louis.

As has been well-dissected all week, the offense has lots of improving to do after a season-low 206 yards against Dallas Sunday.

Offensive line coach Tom Cable said Wednesday that his position group was as complicit as any other in what happened.

“They are doing a lot of good things,” Cable said. “We are just a little bit out of whack offensively, as we all know. So we have to work through it and play better in a lot of areas, and that group s no different than any other area of the team.”

Two things Cable cited were an inability to convert on third down — Seattle was just 5-13, in part because only one was of shorter than six yards; and some communication issues up front.

“When you are keeping the game on third-and-five or less then that’s staying on schedule because then your third downs are much, much more manageable,” Cable said. “We have not been where we want to be on third down, and that’s where it all falls back to.”

As for the communication issues, Cable said some of that Sunday fell back on Steve Schilling, who was making his first NFL start at center in place of injured Max Unger.

“He played good,” Cable said. “The issue was correcting the false starts. That was on him being a little late, and we missed a couple of communications. So we will get that cleaned up. Unfortunately, they were all on the center spotlight last week, and that’s just more being comfortable, being on time. He owned it and we got it and we’ll work on it and try to fix it.”
