Video: New Seahawk Tony Moeaki ready to get to work

Wednesday marked the first practice for one of the newest Seahawks, tight end Tony Moeaki, signed as a free agent on Monday.

The 6-3, 252-pounder was waived by Buffalo in September while battling a hamstring injury (getting an injury settlement in the process).

It was the latest in a series of injuries that have struck him since the 2012 season, the second of two seasons when he was the primary starter for Kansas City (also in 2010), years in which he combined to make 80 receptions for 1,009 yards.

Moeaki said he was cleared to play last week and had a tryout with another, unnamed team, and then received a call from Seattle over the weekend, flying here on Sunday and signing on Monday.

“I’m just real excited to be here,” said the soft-spoken Moeaki, who played in college at Iowa.

Asked what he expects his role to be, he said “just coming in competing every day and just try to help the team in any way I can. I have to learn the playbook first. The last 24 hours have been lots of studying.”

Moeaki said he feels equally adept at receiving and run blocking, the latter being something the Seahawks have lacked at times with the absence of Zach Miller, who remains indefinitely sidelined after having ankle surgery following the Denver game.

“We’re still looking for a little bit of power at the tight end position,” offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said today.

Asked what he expects out of Moeaki, Bevell said the Seahawks “first have to see what he can do. In other words, get back to him in a few days.

Moeaki said he thinks he can make a pretty quick transition.

“For me, I feel like all offenses are pretty similar,” he said. “Just different language and stuff like that.”

Moeaki has also struggled with knee and shoulder issues the past few years but said for now that’s all in the past. “I’m here right now and I’m focused on the future,” he said.

Here’s some video of what Moeaki had to say today:
