Browns waive former Seahawk fullback Kiero Small

The Cleveland Browns waived fullback Kiero Small on Tuesday, which is worth keeping an eye on. The Seahawks drafted Small in the seventh round of this year’s draft but cut him before the season because Derrick Coleman had already solidified the fullback spot on the roster.

The Browns swooped in and picked up Small, but they released him on Tuesday in favor of another fullback. Small could be an option for the Seahawks. When Coleman was lost with an injury, the Seahawks signed 285-pound Will Tukuafu to play fullback. Tukuafu had a solid game against the Giants last week in only his second week with the team, and it will be interesting to see if the Seahawks decide to go with Small instead, a player they liked coming out of the draft. General manager John Schneider was particularly high on Small at the time of the draft.

Small is 5-8 and 244 pounds, and he showed his physical style of play in the preseason, when he still needed to refine the technical aspects of his game but when he showed the power that Schneider previously liked.

Small started the season on the Browns’ practice squad, but he started the last three games. The Browns waived him in favor of Ray Agnew, who previously started the first six games for Cleveland.

If nothing else, the contrast between Small (5-8, 244) and Tukuafu (6-4, 284) shows there is no one-size-fits-all mold in the NFL.
