Cliff quotes: Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril talks to the media

Here’s some of what Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril had to say to the media today after it was announced he had signed a new four-year contract beginning in 2015 and running through 2018.

(On his reaction to the new deal) Oh man I’m happy. I’m happy to know that one I’ll be back in Seattle with such a great group of guys. The talent on this team is amazing and I’m glad to be a part of it.

(On if he was working on the deal for a while) We tried to do something after the season last year and they had different things they had to do to try to get things going and I told my agent not to call me really throughout the season until something was really worth paying attention to and they called me and voila.

(On if it is a relief) It definitely is a relief. I didn’t want to go back to free agency. I didn’t like that whole process two years ago. I like it out here. I love what Coach Carroll is doing with the guys here. I love the scheme. The guys that we have in the locker room make it so fun to play here and again just being in Seattle and the environment that we have going, we want to keep the party going.

(On proving something after two years) I felt like I was going to prove to somebody that I deserved to get a long term deal. It’s taken a while to get a multi-year deal but you know everything happens for a reason. It’s all about timing. A few years ago people we’re talking about the free agency market and all these different things and it just worked out for me here and I’m definitely happy that they want me back and I’m happy to be back.

(On coming in on a short term deal, now getting a big deal and what that means) It speaks a lot about John [Schneider] and Coach Carroll. Obviously we had to show what we can do; they felt like they could come in and do some things. They kept us a second year. They gave Mike [Bennett] all of the money last year and I guess they like what we’re doing and what we bring to the team. I love the way the organization is run so I’m definitely happy. Again, that they decided to keep me around a little bit.

(On one of many defensive players getting locked up) It’s awesome. It’s great. It kind of gives you that college feel. You sign and you go to college and you’re going to be with those guys for four or five years and just knowing that a lot of us are going to be here for the next few years and are only growing and getting better. I’m probably one of the older guys that have gotten signed so it’s just cool knowing that the locker room won’t change too much and that’s rare in the NFL.

(On how he’s grown as a player here in Seattle) I’ve learned how to win. No, I’ve learned how to approach the game a little different. Obviously Coach Carroll the way he runs things is a little different as for –he’s not really an uptight environment. It’s not hard to–like I enjoy coming to work. Some places it can be hard on you as far as for if you’re losing and the coaches want to talk to you because people are worried about their jobs and this and that and we just have a great group of guys and management obviously they’re doing a great job of how they go about what kind of guys they want in here and it’s just fun to come to work every day.
