Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril: “Want to keep the party going”

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril said what you might expect after it was announced today he has signed a four-year contract extension worth $28.5 million and $16 million guaranteed — he’s a happy man.

The 28-year old Avril has been searching for a long-term deal for a few years but said he’s simply happy now to finally get one done and with the Seahawks.

“Ah man I’m happy,” Avril said when he met the media after practice today. “I’m happy to know that, one, I will be back in Seattle with such a great group of guys. The talent on this team is amazing and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Avril said he wanted to get a new deal after last season — he signed a two-year contract worth as much as $15.1 million prior to the 2013 season — but the Seahawks told him they had to get some other things done first.

“We tried do do something after the season last year an they had different things they had to do to try to get things going,” Avril said. “And I just told my agent not to call me really through the season until something was really worth paying attention to. And they called me and viola.”

Avril said signing the deal is “definitely a relief. I didn’t want to go back into free agency. I didn’t like that whole process two years ago and I like it out here. I love what coach (Pete) Carroll is doing with the guys here. I love the scheme, the guys that we have in the locker room make it so fun to play here and again, just being in Seattle and the environment we have going — want to keep the party going.”

Avril turned down a three-year deal worth $30 million with Detroit in 2011 and ended up being franchised and then in free agency in a year when the market for defensive ends cooled. But Avril said any looking back on the way that developed is over now.

“I felt like I was going to prove to somebody that I deserved to get a long-term deal,” he said “It’s taken a while to get a multi-year deal but everything happens for a reason. It’s all about timing.

“You know a few years ago people were talking about the free agency market and all these different things ¬†and it just worked out for me here and I’m definitely happy that they wanted me back and I’m happy to be back.”
