Report: 49ers to interview Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn

According to a report from Mike Garafolo of FoxSports.com, the 49ers will interview Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn tonight in Seattle — the first interview for the team as it attempts to find a successor to Jim Harbaugh.

This is no surprise as Quinn was immediately linked to the job when it officially became open during the weekend.

Not only is Quinn one of the hottest names in the game after heading up a Seattle defense that has led the NFL in yards allowed and points allowed the last two seasons, but he also got his NFL start with the 49ers from 2001-04, initially hired there by then San Francisco-defensive coordinator Jim L. Mora (the former Seahawks head coach and current UCLA head coach).

Quinn was a defensive quality control coach there in 2001-02 and then worked as defensive line coach in 2003-04 (under Dennis Erickson) after having worked in the college ranks previously.

I wrote earlier that Quinn is also scheduled to interview this weekend with the Jets.

As that story notes, coach Pete Carroll supports his coaches seeking out promotions. Interviews with teams who have a bye this weekend must be held by this weekend, so that’s why you are hearing of a lot of interviews this week.

If an assistant such as Quinn were to be hired by another team, the expectation is that he would finish out the season with the Seahawks first.
