Panthers lose DT Star Lotulelei to fractured foot

The Carolina Panthers will enter Saturday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks without second-year starting defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, who has a fractured foot and will not play Saturday.

Carolina coach Ron Rivera confirmed the news in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday after the team’s practice.

“He will not play this week,” Rivera said. “He broke a small bone in his foot and he had surgery this morning to repair it. Hopefully we get an opportunity to move on and if we do, he’ll have a chance to play.”

Lotulelei played at Utah and was the team’s first-round pick in 2013. While he has had an up-and-down season, he had been playing well down the stretch as Carolina won its last four games to get into the playoffs.

Lotulelei had 25 tackles and two sacks this season.

One of the players who will be expected to step in to replace Lotulelei is former Seattle Seahawks Colin Cole.
