NFL announces Bill Vinovich to be Super Bowl referee

The NFL has announced that Bill Vinovich will be the referee for the Super Bowl pitting Seattle and the Patriots Feb. 1 in Glendale.

And if recent history means anything, that’s a good omen for the Seahawks.

Vinovich was a ref from 2001-06 and then again from 2012-now.

And in his second run, Seattle is 5-0 in games in which he has been the ref, including a couple of the more notable regular season wins, such as the 2012 home blowout of the 49ers, and the overtime win earlier this season against Denver. He also did Seattle’s win at Philadelphia in December.

Here’s his Pro Football Reference page with a breakdown of his games. But it’s worth noting that this is not the same crew as the crews are mixed and matched for the playoffs.

This is Vinovich’s first Super Bowl.

He is also a college basketball official and did the Washington-Oregon game Sunday (here’s his college basketball page).
