Defensive coordinator update — Richard still seen as likely successor

Seattle remains in search of a new defensive coordinator to replace Dan Quinn, who was officially introduced as Atlanta’s head coach Tuesday.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Monday that the team would go through a process to replace Quinn.

Recall that when Gus Bradley left in 2013 that the Seahawks worked quickly to hire Quinn, naming him as the new DC on the day that Bradley was announced as the new head coach in Jacksonville.

So far, Carroll’s process has taken four days.

That obviously leads some to wonder how much the Seahawks are considering options other than Kris Richard, who has been considered as the leader for the job.

It was reported earlier today by Pro Football Talk that Richard turned down a chance to follow Quinn to Atlanta. The Falcons hired Richard Smith as defensive coordinator, which further seemed to indicate that Richard was staying in Seattle and would be heavily considered as Quinn’s successor.

One source said today nothing was imminent on naming a new DC and that Carroll was still working through the process. But that can change quickly.

So far, Seattle has lost just one other assistant, with Marquand Manuel following Quinn as the new defensive secondary coach.
