Earl Thomas having labrum surgery, will be recovered by season

In what is no surprise, Seahawks safety Earl Thomas is having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder but should be recovered in time for the 2015 season.

The news was first reported by ESPN and since confirmed by a league source. The surgery has not yet happened but is scheduled. Recovery is in the 6-8 month range, which would knock Thomas out for much of the off-season program but should allow him to be back for the season.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll on Monday said it was possible Thomas would have surgery to repair the injury, which was suffered in the first half of the NFC Championship game against Green Bay and which Thomas played with in the Super Bowl.

Thomas talked at length about his shoulder injury when he met the media at the Super Bowl. He also wrote at length about his shoulder injury here.

This is the first of what will be a handful of surgeries for the Seattle secondary.

Cornerback Jeremy Lane will have surgery to repair the broken left arm suffered on an interception in the first quarter. Cornerback Richard Sherman is expected to have surgery on his elbow. And safety Kam Chancellor may have surgery to repair a torn MCL in his knee suffered in practice on the Friday prior to the game.

Carroll has said all should be back for the start of the 2015 season.
