Four players — two Seahawks, two Patriots — fined by NFL for melee at end of Super Bowl

The NFL announced today that four players — two Seahawks and two New England Patriots —were fined for the melee at the end of the Super Bowl.

Fined for the Seahawks were linebacker Bruce Irvin and defensive tackle Michael Bennett. Irvin was fined $10,000 and Bennett $8,268 (the latter is the minimum for that offense). Each was fined for unnecessarily striking an opponent.

Fined for the Patriots were tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui, each fined $8268. Gronkowski was also deemed to have unnecessarily struck an opponent and Hoomanawanui was judged to have unnecessarily ripped an opponent’s helmet off.

Irvin was thrown out of the game but apologized for his actions later to reporters and via Twitter:
