Oakland Raiders hire Seattle assistant Ken Norton Jr. as defensive coordinator

The Oakland Raiders today officially announced the hiring of Seahawks linebacker coach Ken Norton, Jr., as defensive coordinator.

Norton has been with the Seahawks since 2010, arriving with Pete Carroll. In fact, all of Norton’s coaching career consists of working for Carroll. He was an assistant at USC from 2004-09 before coming to Seattle with Carroll.

A former NFL linebacker, he played for the 49ers from 1994-2000 before retiring.

He is the third defensive assistant to leave the Seahawks, with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn having departed to become head coach with the Atlanta Falcons, and defensive assistant Marquand Manuel leaving with Quinn to become defensive backs coach with the Falcons.

Carroll said on Monday that the team would have “a process” for replacing Quinn. Secondary coach Kris Richard has been thought the leading in-house candidate. There had been some speculation that Norton could also be a candidate to replace Quinn and his departure only heightens the idea that Richard will take over, though nothing has been announced as of Friday afternoon.

Norton will work in Oakland under new head coach Jack Del Rio, with whom he played for three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bruce Irvin reacted to the news via Twitter, as did other players:
