Pro Football Talk notes Lynch would owe Seahawks money if he retires

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has some additional thoughts on the Marshawn Lynch situation this morning.

And one thing he notes is that Lynch would have to write a check to the Seahawks for $1.5 million if he were to retire.

That would be to cover the pro-rated share of Lynch’s $6 million bonus for signing the contract in 2012. Lynch has already received the money, but on the condition that he play the four seasons (it’s obviously different if the team makes the decision and releases him — then he keeps it).

As Florio notes, it would seem unlikely Lynch would want to write a check to the Seahawks to retire.

But as everyone involved also seems to be saying, no one really knows what Lynch is thinking.

It’s worth highlighting the comment Michael Robinson made yesterday that “I don’t think he knew whether he was going to play last year until almost training camp.”

That people weren’t completely sure Lynch was coming back last season is something that’s been whispered a lot privately and that may have had more to do with some of what happened last off-season — the idea that the team might go tailback-by-committee, for instance — than was realized at the time.
