Every time I take the 511 bus, I wait by this forgettable brick building at Howell and 9th. I’ve been intrigued by it for a while. It’s a dental plate laboratory, but you can’t see from outside what goes on behind the curtains with floral patterns. Next to it there used to be parking lots. Now it is eclipsed by luxury condo towers The Olivian and Olive 8.
Since it was built in 1954 this little building must have witnessed a lot. On a recent morning, I decided to step inside. Two friendly receptionists put me in contact with the doctor who runs the practice. I met her a few days later and she showed me around inside, where they were busy at work making dentures that will bring a new smile to people’s faces. Come back tomorrow and you’ll get to meet Doctor Alecia Nowak and lab technician Lam Le.
