Mathxercise time with Mr. Kelly

Like Mrs. Barber, Brian Kelly also teaches kindergarteners at Madrona K-8 School. His classroom is next to hers and the kids are concentrating on a math test when I arrive. Mr. Kelly has a special way to make academics fun. After he picks up their assignments, they move to another part of the classroom for mathxercise!
Each kid has to count from one to ten as they go through a series of moves. First position is arms up, then one leg out, then elbow up in a stretching position. I feel like moving too, but I’m trying to draw as fast as I can to capture the action.
Brian has been teaching for 12 years and loves it –“I get to sing, dance, play… be funny.” He’s heartbroken about the upcoming budget cuts. “I wish some of these politicians came and taught kindergarten for a day.” Still, he would do it for half the money if he had to. “Nobody who became a teacher did it to get rich,” he said.
