Fremont Troll may have a taste for shoes

I’ve seen shoes hanging from wires in other locations but I didn’t think much of the odd sighting until I saw three pairs, no less, stucked on the wires next to the Fremont Troll (see arrows on the sketch.)
What is this supposed to mean? I did a Google search and found a wide range of explanations: from teenagers throwing their shoes up just because you can, to the shoes marking a spot where drugs are sold, which sounds more like an urban legend to me.
Or maybe the troll has a taste for shoes. I made sure to sketch fast and leave before he would take mine.
