Performance artist to fly 121 kites from Gas Works Park

When I went to Gas Works Park a couple of weeks ago –my first time there– I was so overwhelmed by the views that I couldn’t decide where to start drawing. At the end, I left without sketching any kite action from what must be one of the most scenic kite-flying hills in the world.
This week I had an opportunity to do that when I got a sneak peek of one of the 121 kites that master kite flyer Seth Abramson will fly here simultaneously on Sept. 9 from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Each kite is meant to represent one of 121 credit unions that belong to Credit Unions of Washington, a cooperative established in 2003. They’ve commissioned Abramson to create something that would give people “a moment away from the chaos,” said Bill Grant, one of the creative directors behind the project.
Abramson is looking forward to meeting the local community of kite enthusiasts and is confident about his performance. “If the wind is being agreeable, from 5 to 10 miles per hour, we can have the kites up there all day,” he said during a phone interview from his home base in Rock Camp, W. Va., where he’s been busy building the double-tailed kites.
I won’t be able to make it to Abramson’s performance, but I’m sure I’ll be coming back to Gas Works Park. I could never get tired of drawing from here.
