Were you at the Macy’s Holiday Parade this morning? If so, you may have seen me and my family walking with the Seattle Times float. I’m a lucky guy!
I had a few minutes to take some notes before the parade started. You can see The Times’ balloon float in my sketch, a black dog pulling a newspaper.
We were carrying candy canes in our newsboy outfits and handed them out to people along the 1-mile stretch (Thanks to @westseattleblog for this tweetpic.)
It was a lot of fun. The parade moved faster than I thought and my wife and I had to make sure our kids kept up with the pace. They did a great job handing out the candy canes and waited until the end to have one themselves.
Some people in the crowd recognized me because I had written “The Seattle Sketcher” on the back of my outfit with marker. I got a few compliments. “Are you the sketcher, I love your work!” shouted a woman. I also heard someone say “Yay, print media!” Others told us they subscribe to the paper.
It was really nice to get all that positive feedback and to know that people still value getting their newspaper on their doorstep. The dog would surely miss it if it wasn’t there.
Thanks to everyone at the parade this morning for a wonderful, unforgettable time. I will return to my Fridays “where’s the sketcher” posts next week.
