Sketch-biking to work

I biked to work today, the first time I’ve ever done it. After talking to bike commuters these past few days (Andy, Caitlin, Shelly and Glenn,) and getting multiple messages encouraging me to try it, I thought, why not? If so many people enjoy it, I might too.
So, I bought a helmet, dusted off the old mountain bike, pumped up the flat tires and started my morning pedalling instead of driving.
To my surprise, it only took me twice as long to get to the park and ride where I normally leave my car and catch a bus. I didn’t enjoy going up two hills –I had to get off and push the bike in fact– but I enjoyed feeling the wind and seeing the streets around my neighborhood from a different vantage point.
I felt I wanted to stop at every intersection to do a sketch, but I waited until I arrived at the park and ride.
It was a quick 5 minute sketch that I colored once I got on the bus. Later in the day, I also did a sketch of my new helmet — my last helmet got lost in the move from the East Coast four years ago.

I’m far from becoming an everyday bike commuter, but I may consider biking to the park and ride more often when the weather permits. Thanks to Bike to Work Day, I’ve discovered a new way to commute, and I like it.
Next time, I may leave home early to stop for a longer sketch!
