The allure of boating

Sketched Sunday, May 27, about noon
I think Seattle could use one more nickname in addition to Rain City, Emerald City or Jet City. How about Boat City?
Seattle wouldn’t be where it is or what it is today without boats. Captain Vancouver charted the first maps of the Puget Sound on the Discovery and the first settlers arrived at Alki Beach by sailboat. Seattle is in fact one of the greatest port cities in the country, Colleen Wagner told me last year when I visited the Discovery Modelers Education Center at Lake Union’s old armory.
And Wagner knows what she’s talking about. She is one of the founders of the Center for Wooden Boats, where I came last Sunday to sketch with some friends. This weekend is the 34th Annual Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival, a great opportunity to experience Seattle as a boat city!
The sketch above shows the Allure, a vintage wooden yacht originally built in 1928. You can see more drawings we did here.
