Books at Freeway Park are almost free

After my sketch at Paul Pigott Memorial Corridor, I walked all the way down to Waterfall Plaza, the central gathering space in Freeway Park at 6th Avenue and Seneca St.

Park coordinator Kyle Emerson arrived soon after carrying boxes full of books – the Friends of Seattle Public Library host book sales here Monday through Friday from noon to 2 p.m.
He said the book carts are good for the park because they bring in more visitors and also good for the library because it gives them a way to raise money from donated books. They are all priced $1. You can’t really beat that price.

When the book carts opened at noon I had the opportunity to meet volunteers Leo Soper and Dotty Guth. Soper said they sell about 60 or 70 every day.

Michael J. Brennan bought three paperbacks, all titles by favorite author Dean Koontz. “I’m buying so many so I can make it through the winter,” said Brennan, who likes to come here to enjoy a moment of solitude away from the office.

By the time I had to leave, many people were stopping by and browsing through the stacks. The carts will be at the park through Sept. 3.
