Note to self: sign up for that kayaking lesson

Sketched June 26, 10:59 a.m.
Back in April, I sketched a view of the Montlake Bridge looking east towards Portage Bay. And, as it often happens, the day wasn’t long enough to draw everything I wanted. There will be another chance, I always tell my self.
That new opportunity came last Sunday, when I visited West Montlake Park in Portage Bay with the Seattle Urban Sketchers. During the outing, I met a kayaker who approached the shoreline to confirm if we were indeed the artists he had been following online for a while. Fred Young, of Fremont, was also familiar with my newspaper column and had very nice things to say about it. “It gives the paper a whole other layer of texture,” he said. “Thanks for doing what you do.”
That just made my day, so I can’t resist blogging about it and sharing the sketch I did of Young, who’s originally from Michigan but has lived in Seattle for about ten years.
Meeting Fred on his kayak also reminded me that my wife got me a kayak lesson for my birthday that I still have to take. I’ve always thought it would be a blast to sketch from a kayak. I’ve done it once, but it was a double-seater and I didn’t have to worry about paddling.
