Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

October 29, 2008 at 11:57 AM

Welcome soccer fans

Hello everyone in cyberland, this is Jose Romero from the Seattle Times. I’ll start posting to our new Seattle Sounders FC blog in about a week, so keep an eye out for that.

Let me first tell you a little about me…I have covered the Seahawks for seven seasons and have been at the Seattle Times since 1999. Recently I was given the opportunity to be the beat writer for Sounders FC and I couldn’t pass up watching and sharing the debut and development of a new franchise in this city.

Many people I talk to have their favorite club teams. I know Arsenal fans, Man U. fans, Tottenham Hotspur fans, Chelsea fans, FC Barcelona fans and a few more. My leaning has been to follow CD Chivas de Guadalajara because I have roots in that city in Mexico.

Freddie Ljungberg’s signing on Tuesday was another major moment in the growth of the franchise. The club really goes all out to put on a spectacle for the media and public and it’s refreshing to see their approach toward fans. When Kasey Keller signed, he was immediately ushered out to the Qwest Field turf where scores of youth players were there to meet and cheer him. The team even handed out goalkeeper gloves.

At the announcement of the Microsoft sponsorship, a huge green jersey was unveiled. Say what you want about the colors, but rave green stands out.

Ljungberg was a good sport and it was a good show. The club showed a highlight video of his exploits and Ljungberg posed for photos with his rave green No. 10 jersey and a Sounders FC scarf.

I look forward to more news about the team in the months ahead. The next big headline will probably be the naming of the head coach. There are 24 more players needed to fill out the final roster, and the expansion draft that will bring 10 potential players is Nov. 26. In January, there’s the Major League Soccer combine and Superdraft. The team’s training camp will take part in both Argentina and Los Angeles, presumably at the Home Depot Center.

The MLS regular-season schedule is to be announced in February and the first game will likely be in late March.

I plan to be at the Sounders’ open tryout on Nov. 15 at Starfire Sports Complex (the home of Sounders FC), so watch the blog for a post or two from that.
