Answering a question

Question from reader: How many players can each MLS team protect in the expansion draft and can the Sounders sign any A-league (USL) player they want or do some MLS teams hold rights to some of these players?

Answer, thanks to Sounders FC media relations:

MLS teams may protect 11 players and they will only lose one, if any.The Sounders can take 10 total from the 14 teams.

As for the USL player issue…Sounders FC would be

able to negotiate with players from Seattle or any other USL club and

potentially sign them as Discovery players. Obviously the team wouldn’t need

to ‘purchase’ the rights of any USL Sounders player; However, Sounders FC would

need to negotiate with other USL clubs for their players.

In December, all MLS clubs submit their list of Discovery players, to a

maximum of 10. It’s possible that a given player could appear on

multiple teams’ Discovery lists. But in the case of Seattle USL players

on those lists, Sounders FC gets first rights to sign them.

My thanks to Frank MacDonald from Sounders FC. MLS expansion draft is Nov. 26.
