The at-times controversial U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper raised the 12th Man flag here at Qwest Field today as only she can — pulling off her Seahawks No. 12 jersey to reveal a Barack Obama T-shirt and then holding up the gold medal around her neck for the 68,000 or so to see.
OK maybe the gold medal thing was a bit much. But I loved it when she publicly fumed about being benched in the 2007 World Cup. She showed some gumption saying how she felt, I thought, and then had to deal with being ostracized by her teammates. And she was redeemed by helping the U.S. win gold in Beijing.
The Obama thing — no, this blog is not going to become a place to talk politics — was a nice touch, too.
