Being at and covering this match ranks as one of the highlights of my career as a sports journalist, and not only because I am of proud of my Mexican roots. I’ve followed Mexico for many years and LOVE the rivalry between the U.S. and Mexico in soccer. Below is my favorite youtube video of the match. The reason I am posting it is because I was looking at the attendance for the Mexican national team tour through the U.S., which opened at Qwest Field last April, and the Seattle game was the second-highest attended. See under the video:
Look at these figures from the Mexico tour:
April 16 vs. China Seattle, WA Qwest Field 1-0 56,416
June 4 vs. Argentina San Diego, CA Qualcomm 1-4 68,498
June 8 vs. Peru Chicago, IL Soldier Field 4-0 33, 608
September 24 vs. Chile Los Angeles, CA Los Angeles Coliseum 0-1 32,924
November 12 vs. Ecuador Phoenix, AZ Chase Field 2-1 25,587
Interesting. Chicago, L.A. and Phoenix are major Mexican and Mexican American population centers, yet Seattle outdrew all three. Bien hecho amigos y aficionados! Anyone have any stories from that night to share?
