A chat with Freddie Ljungberg

An informal one-on-one from last Thursday at the fashion show:

Me: Are you excited for the start of the season?

Freddie: Yeah, for sure. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun. The closer it gets, the more real it is. I’m in constant contact with Adrian (Hanauer) and them about the players we’re getting, and what’s happening, so it’s great.”

Me: Have you met any of your teammates and guys from the expansion draft?

Freddie: Yeah, I met some of them. And then I met Sebastien Le Toux today.

Me: So this is your first time meeting these guys, except for Kasey Keller?

Freddie: Yeah. Kasey I played against each other a lot. But the rest, this is the first time I’m meeting them.

Me: Do people really recognize you around town (here)?

Freddie: Yeah they do. Everybody’s been really friendly and obviously greeting me and welcoming me. So it’s been a great feeling.

Me: Do the fans you run into treat you differently in the U.S. compared to Europe?

Freddie: Definitely. They’re a bit more fanatic in Europe. They go a little bit nuts but they’re very friendly and wishing me good luck. So they’re nice.

Me: What have you been doing in Seattle?

Freddie: I did some (photo) shoots for the catalogs and stuff with the new kit. I went to see houses. I did that last time as well. Then I went to the Seattle Seahwks training ground and was there for a bit.

Me: Where are you looking for a house?

Freddie: Um, I don’t know an area yet. I’m just looking. I know what I want. I want a nice house. So I’ve been in a lot of different areas and hopefully I’ll find one.

Me: But you definitely want to get something before training camp?

Freddie: Yeah. This is the third trip (to Seattle.) That’s why every time I’ve been here I’ve asked to see what sort of houses there are. For me it’s very important. If you’re not happy between the games, you won’t perform on the pitch, so I need to have my house and all that sorted when I get here.

Me: What do you do now, between now and when training camp starts?

Freddie: I do Thai boxing every day to keep myself fit. I’ve been doing that for a long time, but now when I’m not playing soccer I can do that a little more.

Me: Is that muay thai?

Freddie: Yeah. (He shows me a mark on his face from the workout). And then I do a lot of sprint running to keep myself fit. It’s going to be more football when I get here.

Me: You’ll go back to Sweden for the holidays?

Freddie: Yeah. I’m going back to London now until Christmas. After Christmas and the holidays I’m going back home (to Sweden).

Me: Do you have a family?

Freddie: No, I’m a single guy. But I have my family and godsons and things like that.
