Catching you up on everything Sounders FC

I got a request from a reader to kind of capsulize the chronology of the team and catch recent converts up to what has gone on with the team from its inception to now. So here goes.

-November 2007: Major League Soccer announces Seattle will become 15th franchise.

-The team’s first player is MF Sebastien Le Toux, a French national who played for the United Soccer Leagues Sounders. That franchise folded at the end of the season.

-The team has since signed GK Kasey Keller, an Olympia native; MF Sanna Nyassi from Gambia and designated player Freddie Ljungberg from Sweden, who’d been playing in the English Premier League.

-XBox 360 Live/Microsoft became the most visible sponsor of the club and has its name on the team’s jerseys.

-The team has named former Sonics broadcaster Kevin Calabro as its play-by-play announcer, and KING and KONG TV stations in Seattle will carry games.

-The regular season opener is March 19 on ESPN2 against the New York Red Bulls.

-Joe Roth, a movie studio executive, is the majority owner. The ownership group consists of actor Drew Carey, general manager Adrian Hanauer and Paul Allen, Seahawks owner.

-The team conducted fan voting to name itself and there were three original choices, all that were vetoed in favor of a write-in name, Sounders FC.

-Chris Henderson, a Seattle area native, is the technical director. He helps with player personnel decisions and with Hanauer oversaw the expansion draft last month that saw Seattle select 10 players from 10 other MLS clubs.

-Carey heads the membership association, which has the power to vote out the general manager after four years if it is unsatisfied with how the team is performing. There is also a marching band, “Sound Wave.”

-The team’s uniforms and apparel were recently unveiled. The primary jersey colors are rave green and Sounders blue (not super dark blue).

-The club is currently in the process of finding a coach. Many feel Sigi Schmid, coach of the 2008 MLS champion Columbus Crew, will be named coach soon. Schmid has met with team officials.

I’m sure I’m missing some stuff, but please feel free to comment and add those things if you’d like.

-Jose
