A look at the roster, and what’s next

The roster is up to 19 players now, four of those unsigned. Here’s what the Sounders FC Web site had when I last checked. This roster doesn’t include the draft picks after Zakuani — D Evan Brown, D Jared Karkas (are we going to have some fun with that name or what?) and F/M (because I’m not going to flip those letters around for a cheap laugh) Michael Fucito.

Brown, Karkas and Fucito plus Jeff Parke have yet to be signed. These 19 guys will be the ones at camp when it opens at Seahawks headquarters in Renton, either at the beginning of it next week or sometime thereafter, and the team will bring in several more international players and former USL players to fill out the roster.

Sigi Schmid was asked if there are any holes left to fill on the roster after the draft. Here’s what he said about that:

“There’s still one more phase to come, and that final phase, there’s still some international signings that we’re working on that we want to add to this group as well. That’s sort of the final phase of it. Then, looking at it on paper, we don’t feel there’s any holes, but once you get out there and the day-to-day grind of training, once you see how the chemistry is, how it works together — that’s when you’ll be able to see, and the coaching staff will be able to determine, ‘We need a little bit more here, we’ve got a little bit too much here.’ Or maybe there’s an additional player that we need to try and sign. But right now, when we look at the balance of our team at the positions that guys we think play best at, I think we’ve got pretty good cover, pretty good balance. I think if we walked into training tomorrow, and with 22 players played 11 v. 11, I think we could field two good 11 v. 11 sides that have all the positions covered.”

Also want to take this time to thank everyone for their wonderful compliments and feedback on this blog. I’m hearing so much great stuff from people and it makes all the time I put in worthwhile.
