Sounders FC elected to make its first pick of the MLS SuperDraft, rather than trade it as was being considered. The club chose Akron forward Steve Zakuani with the first overall pick moments ago in St. Louis.
“Up until the last second I had no idea,” Zakuani said on ESPN2, which is broadcasting the first round of the draft. “But it’s a great honor and I’m very excited.”
Zakuani becomes the fourth forward on Seattle’s roster, joining Sebastien Le Toux, Nate Jaqua and Jarrod Smith.
As I write, D Omar Gonzalez, who was also thought to be on the Seattle radar, just got picked third overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Zakuani is a 6-0, 160-pound striker from England who played in the Arsenal Youth team from 1997-2003.
